Poke Bowls

“Poke” is pronounced as “pokay”.

When my friend first suggested we meet at Aloha Poke for lunch, I assumed that this was just another salad bar and rejected the suggestion instantly.  However, when she said it is not a typical salad and sent me the link to the website, I decided to give it a go.  Unfortunately, as there was limited sitting and the cafe does not take reservations, there was already a long queue and we were unable to find seats.  We settled for a Chinese restaurant nearby that day.

I did return a week later for dinner and was hooked!  In my opinion, it is basically a western/Hawaiian version of the Japanese chirashi don.  The word “chirashi” means “scattered,” so this is basically a big bowl fish, vegetables, and additional ingredients of your choice on rice.

I went back several times after that dinner to have lunch when it was less crowded.

This was the queue at about 12pm on a Monday.  Do not be fooled as it gets crowded very quickly after 12pm.

The pokes are served in paper bowls for lunch and you get to choose from a list of ingredients.
